Egg Freezing and Fertility Preservation

A woman’s fertility or ability to have children becomes harder with increasing age. This is a biological fact that is important to understand. With the knowledge of this biological clock, one way to stop this clock from ticking is by freezing eggs. Time stands still for those eggs once they are frozen in liquid nitrogen. That means if eggs are frozen when you are 35, those eggs, when thawed 10 years later, should retain the same fertility potential you had at 35. Of course, there are no guarantees with these approaches, but having a clear idea of your fertility baseline levels will help you determine if this is the right option for you.

The main benefit of freezing eggs is to consider doing so before treatments that might affect your future fertility.

Being diagnosed with cancer or other medical conditions can be a very difficult time for you and your family, and sadly, may also impact future plans to start a family, as some treatments have side effects that may affect fertility. In this challenging time it's therefore also important that fertility preservation options are considered. I will work closely with your oncology team to put in place a tailored fertility preservation strategy that is timely, safe and provides you with the best chance of preserving your fertility until a future time when you’re ready to have a family.

Other women may wish to freeze their eggs because they are not quite ready to start a family but want the option to consider it later. Egg freezing can allow you to take control of your fertility and have children when the time is right for you.
